Can You Help?

Financial Donations

The single biggest factor which may limit our ability to transform hunger in South Africa is, of course, a lack of money.  We are lucky enough to enjoy the staunch support of several key individual, corporate, government and other donors.  However, we need more and even a little helps.

Any contribution you can make will be valued and put to highly effective use. In fact, we and our many partners around South Africa believe that helping FoodBank South Africa today represents the single most cost effective contribution you could make to achieve food security and fight poverty in South Africa.

Food Donations

Our national network makes effective use of huge volumes of good quality food and other groceries, much of which would otherwise go to waste.

Organise a Food Drive

canA great way for your organisation, club or faith community can support food sourcing for your local FoodBank is starting a regular food drive, collecting donations of cans, dry goods and other items needed by your FoodBank.  Before embarking on a Food Drive, be sure to contact your local FoodBank (currently Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth) to discuss current needed items, as well as items we cannot receive (such as opened or partly used cans or jars of food).  If your Food Drive anticipates getting a large volume of food (typically 75kg or more, or 200 cans or more), and you are within 30km of a FoodBank, your local FoodBank will also try to assist you with transport.

Wish List

Please let our national office know if you are in a position to donate warehouse space, goods or professional services to help support and expand the FoodBank SA network.

Start a FoodBank

Part of our role is to nurture foodbanks in all needy parts of South Africa.  The thought of starting a foodbank and making it work may seem overwhelming. We've been there, and what know what needs to be done to make it happen effectively. If you're interested in helping the hungry in your community by forming a foodbank, please talk to us. We may be able to help.

To start, please read The Bare Essentials of a Foodbank.

If you can't help personally but know someone who might have the drive and talent to do so, please draw this to his or her attention.  Alternatively, please consider writing to us to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . As soon as we find someone willing to lead the effort to form a foodbank in your area, we'll forward your offer to them.

Volunteer at a FoodBank

team_thFoodBanks cannot function without the work of our dedicated volunteers, and we invite groups and individuals to contact us to arrange times where you can volunteer at one of our warehouse locations.  We currently have four locations (currently Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth).  Volunteer opportunities involve work on the FoodBank production line by sorting and preparing food for beneficiary organisations, and defacing and relabelling products for further distribution.  We also have opportunities for volunteers wishing to contribute to our awareness campaigns by writing stories, taking video and photographs and any other creative ways of getting our message accross.
