Engen Staff volunteer at FoodBank Cape Town

engenThrough its partnership with FoodBank Cape Town (FBCT), Engen organised a volunteer day where Engen staff, family and friends gave their time, effort and kindness to visit FBCT beneficiaries. The event took place on the 10th of August 2009, in conjunction with National Women's Day celebrations.

Volunteers arrived at 7am with numbers growing from a previously estimated 35 people to an eventual 50 plus! The volunteers met for coffee and were then divided into teams where they were briefed on the day's events.

One group visited Masincedane Special Care and Home, in Nyanga, to engage with children living with Scoliosis and various other degenerative conditions. Volunteers were humbled by the children's happiness and enthusiasm to have visitors. Another group headed off to Abaphumeleli Orphanage in Khayalitsha. Balloons, gift bags and special treats were well received: the children erupted into song and dance, which brought warmth to volunteers whose intention was to share their own warmth.

The highlight of the day was visiting a beneficiary, Fisher's Haven, that houses individuals affected by psychological conditions. It was a learning experience for all volunteers. On arrival, volunteers were taken aback but as the morning progressed the shared experience proved to be fruitful. By the time midday came along and it was time to leave, the volunteers were reluctant to leave, promising to visit again.

To wrap up the day, Engen volunteers returned to the FoodBank to a lunch served while the day's events were debriefed by the appointed team leaders. As Engen volunteers trickled out of the Foodbank, the spirit and togetherness that emanated from the day was inspiring.

“I have witnessed so much change in the learners. Their attendance has improved so much. The teachers are impressed with the learners’ achievements in class, ever since they started receiving the sandwiches they concentrate better in class."
