Western Cape Premier Helen Zille arrived at FoodBank Cape Town this morning, Friday 18 September, ahead of schedule to prepare sandwiches for an underprivileged primary school in honour of 'Do it Day'.
This annual initiative by Greater Good South Africa, has encouraged South Africans to volunteer at local charities each 18 September since 2005. This year the Premier chose South Africa's first foodbank as her NGO of choice. The enthusiastic Zille began working as soon as she arrived, and after donning a hair net and gloves, was barely distinguishable from other volunteers, as she worked - laughing and joking - without stopping for almost an hour.

Premier Zille then personally delivered and distributed sandwiches along with Settlers High School students to the students of Bardale Primary School in Mfuleni, a daily recipient of the Lunch Buddies Programme. She conversed easily with teachers and pupils in Xhosa, while the children welcomed Zille by singing.
Albany donated 2 500 loaves of bread, Woolworths donated 50 jars of peanut butter and 50 tins of jam, fruit was donated by Dole and Unipack (through the Fresh Produce Exporters' Forum), and containers for the lunches were contributed by Tiger Brands.
