On 20 January 2010, forty-five Unilever graduates from different provinces in South Africa spent time at the FoodBank Durban warehouse for a team building programme. Unilever is a major supplier for Food Bank Durban, and has constantly shown great commitment to support community development. Unilever makes monthly food donations to FoodBank Durban which is then carefully redistributed to the needy in the community.
The programme aims to create awareness about foodbanking, and to expose individuals to social challenges people face in South Africa today. The goal was to raise the participant's interest and love for community development! Amongst other activities the group was tasked to make and deliver sandwiches to more than 1000 pupils of a local primary school (Kasturdar Gandhi Primary School). This exercise encouraged interactions between the volunteers, pupils and educators at the school.
More and more programs of such are required in order to build a society that is willing and strong enough to create change. Hereby, we believe FoodBanks can play a vital role in linking the business sector, the civil society sector and the government to the needy, aged and orphaned.
