Meals on Wheels is one of South Africa's oldest food distribution charities, and most well-known in the field of providing nutritious meals for aged people. With October 1 being the International Day of the Aged, we focus specifically on Meals on Wheels co-operation in Gauteng with FoodBank Johannesburg.
Johannesburg Meals on Wheels currently undertakes regular product and food distribution programmes to more than 30 000 needy people in Johannesburg. The recipients of their service include not only the aged, but street children, pre-schools as well as children of school going age.
The Meals on Wheels programme has been operating as a community service for many years and depends heavily on time and effort of volunteers. The programme serves the needy irrespective of race or religion, and with the help of FoodBank Johannesburg it is able to feed these people each week.
"Each Wednesday we supply over 30 different organisations with food parcels for the week. They then feed the poor and elderly in their communities. We also supply more than five old age homes with their weekly food needs," says Clinton van Rooyen.
The branch in the south of Gauteng supplies approximately 300 elderly people with two cooked meals each Wednesday. This food is delivered to the homes by the volunteer drivers. In addition, on a Wednesday, 200 food parcels are handed out to the poor at the front gate of the Meals on Wheels offices.
On Monday mornings food for the week is delivered to five different schools. The programme would not have been able to feed all the poor and needy people without the support they receive from Foodbank Johannesburg, which supplies the programme with all kinds of food on a daily basis.
