Take Action

If you would like to help FoodBank South Africa end hunger in South Africa, here are some actions you can take:

Talk about Hunger over some Microwave Pap

papA great way to start is try your hand at making some microwave pap at work, home, your organisation, book club or faith community, and using the opportunity to discuss some of the issues around hunger among your friends, colleagues and members.  For a great recipe, click here. Talk about out how much you spend on lunch a week, go to an online grocery store and try and work out how you would feed a family of four for a week for just R200 ($30), gather some quotations on hunger and poverty to read, browse the FoodBank SA website, etc.

Buy a Care 2 Carry Bag

care2carry

We have partnered with Fruit & Veg City to produce a limited edition of Care 2 Carry Bags, bright reusable shopping bags that have paintings from children at one of our beneficiary organisations reflecting some of their hopes and dreams.  You can purchase these bags for R10 at any Fruit & Veg City (click here for locations), and R2 out of every purchase is donated to FoodBank SA.  Here is a way to be green, contribute to ending hunger and look fashionable while shopping for your fruit and veggies.

Get a MySchool Card

Volunteer at a FoodBank

team_thFoodBanks cannot function without the work of our dedicated volunteers, and we invite groups and individuals to contact us to arrange times where you can volunteer at one of our warehouse locations.  We currently have four locations (currently Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth).  Volunteer opportunities involve work on the FoodBank production line by sorting and preparing food for beneficiary organisations, and defacing and relabelling products for further distribution.  We also have opportunities for volunteers wishing to contribute to our awareness campaigns by writing stories, taking video and photographs and any other creative ways of getting our message accross.

Organise a Food Drive

canA great way for your organisation, club or faith community can support food sourcing for your local FoodBank is starting a regular food drive, collecting donations of cans, dry goods and other items needed by your FoodBank.  Before embarking on a Food Drive, be sure to contact your local FoodBank (currently Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth) to discuss current needed items, as well as items we cannot receive (such as opened or partly used cans or jars of food).  If your Food Drive anticipates getting a large volume of food (typically 75kg or more, or 200 cans or more), and you are within 30km of a FoodBank, your local FoodBank will also try to assist you with transport.

Make a Financial Donation

donatenow_rolloverThe single biggest factor which may limit our ability to transform hunger in South Africa is, of course, a lack of money.  We are lucky enough to enjoy the staunch support of several key individual, corporate, government and other donors.  However, we need more and even a little helps.

Any contribution you can make will be valued and put to highly effective use. In fact, we and our many partners around South Africa believe that helping FoodBank South Africa today represents the single most cost effective contribution you could make to achieve food security and fight poverty in South Africa.
