parmalatParmalat has put smiles on the faces of hungry people countrywide with the donation of almost 81 tonnes of YogoFun drinking yoghurt to FoodBank South Africa.

After changing the packaging of the delicious yoghurt drink, Parmalat had tonnes of perfectly good product contained in out-of-spec packaging.  The food manufacturer is one of FoodBank’s regular food donors and adheres to a “donate, don’t dump” policy.

“It gives us great pleasure to give to FoodBank because we’re fully supportive of the good work that FoodBank is doing,” said Parmalat’s Chief Executive Officer for Africa, Louise Cooke. “We avoid waste at all costs, but are especially mindful of it considering the extent of the hunger problem in South Africa. Parmalat is committed to improving the wellbeing of the communities in which we operate, and the donation of surplus food to FoodBank is one way of demonstrating this.”

The 80.8 tonnes of YogoFun – amounting to about 230,000 units – was distributed to FoodBank agencies in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.

FoodBank’s food sourcing co-ordinator Elton Leite said FoodBank was always happy to receive yoghurt. “It’s a lovely highly nutritious donation, for which we are very grateful,” said Mr Leite.

Yoghurt is rich in calcium, protein, riboflavin, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. The consumption of low-fat yoghurt has been said to promote weight loss, due to the calcium content.

Billed as the “ideal anytime snack for the health conscious”, YogoFun drinking yoghurt is packaged in 350g square cartons with a convenient screw cap. It’s available in six flavours: strawberry, apricot, granadilla, pineapple, banana custard and vanilla.

One 350g serving of YogoFun contains 11.9 grams of protein and 420mg of calcium.
