It is once again our pleasure to update you on the progress of the FoodBank South Africa network.
On July 21, FoodBank Durban celebrated its official launch, and already after a week of operations we are now distributing the "miracle number" of 5 000 loaves of bread daily to disadvantaged communities in Durban, Pietermaritzburg and surrounding communities. We have another 6 FoodBanks in the incubation stage, so keep listening for more news in the coming months.
On the 9th of August, South Africans celebrate National Women's Day. A little known fact about hunger is that it is unequally biased in respect of gender: More than 60 percent of chronically hungry people are women! So, as an organisation whose primary aim is to tackle hunger in South Africa, we focus this month's newsletter on some of our beneficiary organisations that specifically empower women. One such organisation is the Ncedusizwe Ladies Club in Gugulethu, where their Inter-generation programme pairs orphans from one of our other beneficiaries with "grannies" at the Club every Wednesday afternoon.
Lastly, we announce the first phase of our online donations portal http://donate.foodbank.org.za, where we now are able to accept rand-based donations via credit card. Any contribution you can make will be valued and put to highly effective use, as we continue on our target to build 20 FoodBanks in 3 years.
As a team, and on behalf of our 14 million "Bosses", the hungry of South Africa, we thank you for your continued support of FoodBank SA.
Warm regards from the team at FoodBank SA

Mandela Day "67 Minutes" Campaign
As part of the Mandela Day celebrations to mark Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday, FoodBank SA launched its "67 Minutes" campaign. Participants were encouraged to use 67 minutes to learn about hunger, spend time educating their families, engage their community, use social media and make a donation to the work of FoodBank. While the Mandela Day celebration has ended, you can still encourage people to begin their own 67 Minutes Action Plan.
