news_spacerSprings has arrived again in South Africa, and we are pleased to bring you this month's update on the FoodBank South Africa network.

With September 24th being Heritage Day, we bring you some stories that reflect our founding organisation's heritage in challenging hunger in South Africa.

We focus on three very different organisations and individuals who all have a heritage with FoodBank South Africa and its founding members: Lion's Clubs International, the largest service based organisation in the world, Engen, one of our corporate sponsors, and Magda Meyer, a remarkable township woman who created a feeding scheme with only a few resources, but tons of hope and courage.

We also announce two exciting new developments: the establishment of the fourth FoodBank in Port Elizabeth, and our Corporate Team Building Programme, an innovative experience that combines team building skills while help FoodBanks out at the same time.

Lastly, we thank everyone who contributed last month through our recently launched online donations portal http://donate.foodbank.org.za, as well as those contributing in other ways. At time of writing, more than R15 000 in donations have been received. The challenge of building 20 FoodBanks in 3 years is an enormous one and the greatest limiting factor to our ability to expand more rapidly is financial. Continue encouraging friends, family and your faith communities to donate to this important cause. Remember that hunger does not wait!

Have a great Heritage Day weekend, and at your braai, please remember those less fortunate than you and your family.

Warm regards from the team at FoodBank SA

A Heritage against Hunger: Lion's Clubs

lions_thLions Clubs International is currently the largest service based organisation, with its roots worldwide and a total of 45,000 Clubs & 1.3 Million Members. The Lions share a great heritage in alleviating social economic problems such as poverty and hunger; addressing issues such as impaired vision, lack of education, and at times stepping in through their fundraising efforts to sponsor infrastructure. As one of the founding members of FoodBank South Africa, we are proud to draw on its heritage and support in addressing hunger in our country.

Magda Meyer: Philanthropist eKasi

magda_thAt FoodBank, we get to work with many people and organisations in our poorer rural communities who do credible work in challenging hunger, but occasionally we come across a person whose work is not only credible, but incredible as well. One such person is Magda Meyer, who runs Magda Sopkombuis (Magda Soup Kitchen) in Pedro Street on the outskirts of Paarl. Twelve years ago, Magda, then recently unemployed, started a movement that ended up feeding her community.

Our Progress So Far...

FoodBank South Africa progress at August 2009Each month you can track our progress in our goal of building 20 FoodBanks in 3 years in South Africa. Full plates show fully operational FoodBanks (currently 3), plates with just cutlery show FoodBanks in the incubation stage (currently 6) and the empty plates show FoodBanks yet to be established. Watch this space as we soon start "serving the food" on our fourth "plate", FoodBank Port Elizabeth.
