Dear Friends

I'd like to share with you some important news about the people at FoodBank SA.

Last year Crispin Sonn agreed to prolong his term as the Company's non-executive Chairman to steer us through this transitional year. Having done so, he has now stood down. Crispin's tenure was epitomised by integrity, drive and imagination. Crispin, I thank you for your invaluable support and guidance. Happily Crispin's support for FoodBank SA remains strong and he will remain on our Board.

We are fortunate to have Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana as our new Chairman. Malusi has made countless contributions to South African society. A man of integrity, intellect and stature, Malusi was an early advocate for forming this network, and played an integral role in our early successes.

I'm delighted to welcome Jeroen de Lijster as our Managing Director. Jeroen was selected from close to 200 applicants after an exhaustive recruitment process. He's bright, entrepreneurial and personable, and has experience of both the food industry (in his role as strategic advisor to the national Board of Pick ‘n Pay) and in developing a small business as founder and MD.

Jeroen's appointment allows me to stand down as voluntary MD. I'll remain active as an advocate for FoodBank SA and as part of the Board of governance. My heartfelt thanks to the selfless and talented team of people in the FoodBank SA network for your support this year. Please continue that support for Malusi and Jeroen!

Nutrition plays an integral role in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and is a necessary element of a successful ARV roll-out programme. As 1 December is World AIDS Day, we focus in this newsletter on the tough nutritional choices facing an HIV+ mother with an HIV- child. We'll post additional relevant stories on our website as this month progresses.

Finally in this newsletter we share stories about some recent fundraisers: a gala dinner hosted by FoodBank Cape Town, an Art Auction in London, and Cooking 'Cause we Care, an enterprising project run by two highschoolers from California.

Warmest seasonal greetings

Alan Gilbertson

One of the joyful announcements in life should be: a baby is on the way!  However, for HIV-positive women in South Africa it is a time of worry, as pregancy, birth and subsequent care contains a number of tough choices and challenges, especially if you are food insecure.
