August 9 marks national Women’s Day in South Africa. It’s a public holiday that commemorates a march that took place on this day in 1956 in Pretoria, when 20 000 women protested against the notorious “pass laws” which prohibited the freedom of movement of black people.
As we remember the strength and courage of those women who fought oppression in their day, we reflect on the extraordinary strength and courage of the millions of South African women whose daily lives are a fight for survival.
Tragically, in spite of all the freedoms we have won, the oppressive grip of hunger and poverty still has a hold on us. And the people most vulnerable to this social giant are women.
The HIV/Aids pandemic has widened the poverty trap, leading to a rise in the number of female-headed households and hence more and more women are seeking work to support their families – as well as the orphans and vulnerable children in their communities.
What is astounding and humbling about these women is their resilience and determination against all odds.
Most of the agencies that FoodBank South Africa supports are headed by women who are standing in the gap.
Almost always materially poor themselves, they are the mothers and gogos (grannies) who have opened their homes – often little more than shacks – to share what little they have with others in need. We salute these women for their sacrificial giving and count it a privilege to be able to support them in a significant way.
Thank you for helping us help them!
Until next time,
