In spite of tough trading conditions in the region, FoodBank PE has received generous cash donations from big business, notably Nedbank and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC).
Nedbank and KFC collectively donated close to R200 000, which is to be spent on a cold room and racking for FoodBank’s warehouse.
FoodBank gratefully thanks Nedbank and KFC for their generosity. Special thanks to Bulelani Ntuli, the regional portfolio manager of Nedbank in Gauteng, and Carmen Sporke, the marketing manager of KFC in Eastern Cape.
In addition to financial support, FoodBank PE has been hard at work sourcing food.
Sometimes food comes from unexpected sources. Duane Brassell, the general manager for FoodBank PE, was recently tipped off that a truck carrying Nu Laid eggs had overturned on the N2 en route to Cape Town. Thanks to Duane’s quick response, FoodBank PE collected approximately four tons of eggs, which were a big hit with agencies.
Budding partnerships
As FoodBank PE grows, so too is the number of agencies that the food bank is able to support. One such agency is Helping Hands, a non-profit organisation in Bethelsdorp Extension 31 that serves the elderly in the northern areas. At the April 28 launch of the organisation, FoodBank PE took the opportunity to present to delegates and distribute food parcels to hungry people in the area. In attendance at the launch was the MEC for Social Development, Nonkosi Mvana.
Following meetings between FoodBank PE and the mayor of Nelson Mandela Metropole, Zanoxolo Wayile, Foodbank PE has been invited to attend monthly municipal meetings to explore how local government and FoodBank can partner in the fight to eradicate hunger and poverty.
