Since March this year, Parmalat has donated almost 16 tons of cheddar cheese to FoodBank South Africa.
In poor communities and households, cheese is a rare luxury. So you can only imagine the excitement that it generates, especially when it comes in huge 10-kilogram blocks.
When FBSA distributed cheese to agencies in Cape Town recently, the response was of sheer delight.
Nolubabalo Ndite, the founder of Zanokhanyo Orphanage, home to 35 children in Harare, Khayelitsha, had this to say: “The children really enjoyed the cheese. It put a smile on their faces and makes me happy to know that they are getting the best possible food.”
Cheese provides a unique combination of nutrients that offer many health benefits including improved bone health and healthy teeth.
“Parmalat supports healthy nutrition and efforts to eradicate food insecurity,” said a spokesperson for Parmalat. “Quality dairy products such as ours form an important part of a healthy diet that includes at least three servings of dairy a day.
Parmalat has also given FBSA a whopping 47 tons of Steri Stumpie flavoured milk, which is being distributed by FBSA’s Port Elizabeth branch.
“Our support for FoodBank is in line with our aim of assisting and supporting those in need. We take pride in the knowledge that our products are helping to feed the hungry and the needy through Foodbank’s large network.”
PS: Did you know? A turophile is a person who loves cheese.
Highveld Egg Co-operative / Top Lay Eggs recently donated to FBSA 200 cases of eggs – or 36 000 eggs. That’s a lot of eggs!
Egg is an excellent source of protein. The amino acid composition of egg protein is the nearest to that in mother’s milk. That’s why egg protein is regarded as the complete protein with the highest biological value. Sadly, it’s not often that FBSA receives donations of eggs.
Colin Steenhuisen, of the Highveld Egg Cooperative, said Top Lay had dispatched to a wholesaler an oversupply of eggs. When they realized the eggs weren’t going to sell, they moved quickly to prevent them from going to waste. “We decided to give to FBSA because we know the organisation has the ability to quickly distribute products to worthy legitimate causes and provide us with the necessary certificate for BBBEE purposes.”
FBSA’s beneficiaries LOVE eggs. When our Port Elizabeth branch gave eggs to Nazareth House, a home for the aged, branch manager Duane Brassell received a letter from Sr Illtyd stating the following: “The donation of eggs was EGGsalent and EGGactly what the old folk like. The variety of breakfasts prepared ranged from boiled, poached, fried and scrambled eggs to omelettes for supper and was enjoyed by all …
“Your kindness and all that you give to us does much to brighten the day and cheer a lonely heart. We want you to know that we really value and appreciate your generosity to us.”
We at FBSA are privileged to be able to give to organisations like Nazareth House and without the support of the likes of Highveld Egg Co-operative we wouldn’t be able to do this great work.
