14 million people in South Africa do not know where their next meal will come from
FoodBank South Africa:
- is a not-for-profit company launched in March 2009 to solve this problem
- is run on private sector lines but is supported by the national government
- sources huge volumes of donated food and distributes it efficiently via foodbanks
- has already opened foodbanks in South Africa’s 4 biggest cities
- is working in 10 other centres to form additional foodbanks
- aims to launch a minimum of 20 foodbanks by 31 December 2011
- depends on financial donations to be able to mobilize the donated food
By 30 November 2009:
Every R1 donated to us was enabling us to utilise donated food worth upwards of R12
Cumulative meals we had donated in 2009 15.5 million
Cost per meal 60 South African cents
We could donate:
- 1.7 meals for every rand we receive
- Over 12 meals for every US dollar we receive
- Over 20 meals for every British pound we receive
We were supporting:
- 900 agencies (schools, old age homes, HIV clinics etc to which we provide food)
- 100,000 beneficiaries (Estimated number of hungry people helped by the Agencies)
