(Press Release, 30 Sep 2011) When you sit down to eat dinner every night, do you realise that 20% of South African households – that’s a staggering 11 million people – do not have sufficient access to food?  Thought not.

That’s why FoodBank and Nedbank have teamed up to create the Nedbank Sandwich Jam, a nationwide initiative for Nedbank staff which will see them prepare and distribute 29 000 sandwiches within 24 hours across South Africa.

CEO_Mike_Brown_30Sep2011Nedbank's CEO Mike Brown joined in the fun in Johannesburg.Tabby Tsengiwe Divisional Executive for Nedbank Group Communications elaborates, “Reducing hunger is an enormously effective way to address South Africa’s myriad socio-economic challenges, including crime, unemployment, ill health and (because hungry kids cannot learn) poor education. For this year’s annual staff event, dubbed Deep Green Day, we decided to encourage our staff to give back by providing them with a platform to not only feed the hungry but to raise awareness and combat the challenge of food insecurity. As a green and caring bank, we constantly strive to find new ways to support the communities which we serve.”

FoodBank has been in operation for two years and has donated approximately 32 million meals countrywide, with an estimated value of R121 million. The majority of this food would otherwise have ended up in landfills. FoodBank provides food support to more than 1000 agencies and collectively benefits more than 203 000 hungry South Africans - mostly orphans and vulnerable children, the aged, people suffering from HIV/Aids and the unemployed.

Moreover, the support provided by FoodBank is highly cost effective: the average cost per meal donated for the past year was just R1,81.’

The Nedbank/FoodBank partnership is sure to impact over 29 000 people nationwide today.  Want to help?  Why not join the Fill the Gap Club and make a monthly (or once off) donation to support a community, family or a child. For instance, a donation of R75 will feed a child or adult for a month.  Visit  www.foodbank.org.za for more information on how you can make a difference.
