FoodBank South Africa (FoodBank SA) hopes to raise enough money to provide 250 000 meals for hungry people throughout South Africa in its first Art Auction, to be held at the Foundling Museum in London on 12th November 2009.
The artwork is by professional South African artists such as Helene Kruger, Jennifer Gray, Solly Smook, Nathan Chikoto and Ticha Nyaruviro with a wide selection of pieces, ranging from the typical South African art (bright coloured harbour paintings to the earthy tones of South Africa) to very original paintings of ethnic culture.
A selection of ‘Street Art' will also be displayed. This artwork done by locals on the streets will be offered for auction on the night. FoodBank South Africa will also sell bring beautiful beaded South African Christmas decorations on the night.
FoodBank SA procures good quality food, donated by the food and grocery industries, government agencies, individuals, and other organisations. The food is safely stored, using refrigeration where required, sorted into nutritionally sensible packages, and delivered to beneficiary agencies such as schools, nutritional centres and HIV/AIDS clinics throughout South Africa.
Community FoodBanks have been launched in the four major cities so far, with plans to open a total of 20 foodbanks over the next three years.
FoodBank SA has appealed to public and private donors throughout the year; however, the South African art auction in London is hoping to raise enough money to provide additional 250 000 meals to the needy in South Africa. Currently, the FoodBank network supplies 1.2 million meals a month.
